Dialog with New Members

Hi,

I extend a whole-hearted welcome to all the new members of our Marathi.Net family. Thanx to a spirited effort by Tushar, during last one week MdN has grown by 70% .

All new pals, do take a look at our group-site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/marathidtnet

A couple of mails came along asking why members were not allowed to upload files on MdN.
Let me explain. As per Yahoo! policy, each group gets a meager 20 MB space for file storage. Out of which we have already used upto 90 %. So we have blocked access to more uploads.

I suggest that you have all the currently hosted files downloaded. They will be removed by end of this month, and Files section will be made accessible to members for their uploads.

Alternatively, you can post your files to group by mailing them to marathidtnet-owner@yahoogroups.com . Group Moderators will upload them on group-site as and when it is possible to do so.

Suggestions about improvement and including constructive criticism is always welcome.

Need For Moderators

Well, this mail is in regards to a query as to whether there is any need for a moderator panel.

In my opinion, Yes, there is. The idea of putting a group entirely into the hands of members looks great theoretically, but if implemented will lead to nothing but chaos.

We have democracy in India, right? Does that mean that each one of us takes part in governance? No. There is only a tiny fraction of population, called as Government, which is formally responsible to the country.

Having a moderator panel doesn’t mean that we distrust our members. It means that we care for our friends who are a part of our online family and wish to spare them from bulky forwards, virus threats and in-consequential one-line mails.

Besides, members can - and do - leave a group as per their whims and wishes... A moderator cannot, or at least is not expected to! He/she is a part of its philosophy.

Before concluding, I wish to note that such mails indicate a genuine interest in group activities. We always welcome such open-minded discussion as well as constructive criticism!

Why is MdN a non-focussed group?

Hi,

First n foremost, abt the lack of a centralized theme.. But hey, such a theme is there:- To provide a common platform to all Marathi people with varied interests !!

Let me explain it a bit.. see, if one has to express views regarding Sonia Gandhi as India's PM, they cannot do so in group dedicated to Indian Classical Music or if one wants to post a technical article on Visual Basic.NET, they can't do so in a group dedicated to promotion of Marathi language, can i ?

That’s the very reason MdN is a Non-Focussed Group...A common meeting place to ALL Marathians where they could come together and discuss any topic under the sun. In doing so, MdN may have suffered (for a while) from excessive posts and unwanted forwards, but that's the price we had to pay.

Also, there will be some mails which might interest me and some which might not. But it does keep us abreast of a large number of issues. For example, over last couple of months we have fought over as diverse topics as Sonia Gandhi as Indian PM , Reservations in Educational Institutes n Govt Jobs, Gandhi v/s Godse, Linux v/s Windows, and a host of others. Such a range wouldnt have been possible in any grp dedicated to a single cause.

MdN started 8 months earlier with just 4 members n myself. Today we have 480 members. And this has been possible without much effort on my part. People joined MdN n felt happy with the experience. What else would one ask for?

What Are We Looking At ?

It was a Thursday night.
I was walking back to my rooms. There was a family walking a few paces ahead of me:
husband, wife and their five-year old son walking in between them.

The road ahead was a straight one. It was clear night. A full moon had risen just above the horizon.
It was a beautiful sight. and I was looking at it, mesmerized.
The kid too must have seen it, because he exclaimed," बाबा, तो बघा चांदोबा!!"

The father murmured something, but the mother shouted,'' अरे, नीट खाली बघून चाल रे.... धडपडशील नाहीतर!!"

The kid never once looked up at the sky till they reached their apartment.

I felt a bit sorry for the kid, and a bit angry towards the lady. No doubt, her reprimand had
come out of concern for her child. But in doing so, she had prevented him from savouring one of the beautiful sights in the world.

What would have happened at most? The boy might have stumbled on to something and
might have had a fall. But parents were there to take are of that.

When we keep looking at only at the obstacles in our path,
we often lose sight of our true goal.
But if we are focused on our goals,
there is God with us to care our care.
